frequently asked questions

Do you work with absolute beginners?

I have the patience, vocabulary and skills to work with creators at any level, however, beginners are my expertise! I’ve taught beginners at the non-profit, community college and university level for the past 20 years.

Do I need my own computer to learn from you?

Yes. I do not have a computer classroom or lab at my disposal so you will need to have a desktop or laptop computer to work with. It is possible to learn using a tablet though you’d need to be skilled at using the touch screen or stylus to participate.

Where do classes take place?

in your home! I do not have a fixed location from which to offer workshops. I come to your home to work with you individually or with one or two of your friends who also want to learn. So the location is your home!

An alternative option is for us to connect remotely. In this scenario, we would communicate by shared cloud documents, email and video conferencing software.

Tell me more about the home hosting option

If you decide to host a workshop, you will be responsible for

  • inviting 1 – 2 guests (your choice!)
  • providing a clean, comfortable, well-lit workspace
  • providing a table surface for laptops
  • providing strong internet signal / connectivity because 2 – 4 people will be actively online for 3 hours
  • providing instructor (me!) with name and email contact information so that I may send information to the participants prior to the workshop.
  • collecting the workshop fees at the start of the workshop.
What is the workshop format?
  • I use the word “workshop” to imply a supportive, personalized environment where we work together to get your project off the ground.
  • There is a lot of flexibility, but for the sake of providing a starting point . . . workshops occur in a series of three.
  • Each workshop meets for three hours.
  • At the beginning of the first workshop in a series, we’ll start with a 15 minute orientation where introductions, outline, expectations and outcome will be discussed.
  • The orientation is followed by 45 minutes of instruction and practice.
  • At the top of each hour, I offer students a 5 – 10 minute break which is optional though recommended!
  • You are welcome to schedule whichever workshops you want. Our planning beforehand may indicate a logical order for scheduling the workshops.
Would you be open to working remotely?

Yes. I work remotely with several people, functioning as a coach, guide, sounding board and instructor.

We can schedule calls, work together through online meeting platforms, through collaborative document sharing or whatever means suits you best.

Let’s spend some time getting the contours of your project and needs mapped out and then we can make a plan to accomplish your goals.

Tell me more about the one-on-one coaching option.

The coaching option seems the most useful if you have a project, product or service that you’d like help communicating about.

  • As an outside set of eyes and ears, I can help you identify and define your story; showing what makes your offering unique and of value for your audience.
  • Once we’ve mapped out your story, I can help you:
    • learn how to tell it through the format(s) of your choosing (website, blog, vlog, podcast, video, live broadcasts)
    • figure out what platform and tools will work best for you
Do you take on private clients for web production, etc?

I’m open to it, but honestly would prefer to show you how to make and maintain your own content! One of the reasons I’m offering to show people how to make their own web content is that I know that you are better off learning how to do it yourself.

No one knows your story, product, service or brand better than you. No one cares about whatever it is you want to produce as much as you. When you hire someone to do the work, getting them to understand and care about your message as much as you do is very challenging (understatement!)

In my experience, you’re better off learning how to do it yourself. at the very least, invest in understanding the process and concepts so that you can hire and monitor a producer with confidence.

More on this topic. . .

Q: What should you do if  you absolutely don’t want to produce your own web content?

A: Invest in taking a workshop or two anyway.

The experience will give you valuable frameworks to communicate effectively with whoever you hire. Put another way . . . understanding the concepts and language will enable you to be in a productive partnership with developer.

Is it possible for me to propose a workshop topic that isn't listed here?

Yes! Leave a note in the contact form below and let’s discuss how I can meet your needs.

Can I take this for credit or credentialing of any kind?

While I do offer instruction at several established Bay Area schools, the workshops offered here are not affiliated with any formal institution and can not be taken for credit. I do offer a certificate of completion after each workshop as an acknowledgement of your efforts.

That being said, there are tremendous opportunities for those who know how to tell their own story (or a business or brand story) using the skills I teach in the workshops offered here. I follow the dot com and startup industries closely and have a good sense of what is needed to enter into these arenas.

I’m also a staunch advocate of self employment and entrepreneurship. I always weave workforce and business trends into the material we cover per students interest.

How much does each workshop cost?

Workshop for two people is $75 per person per workshop (each participant pays $25 / hour)

Workshop for three people is $50 per person per workshop (each participant pays about $17 / hour)

Individual one-on-one instruction is $50 / hour

? Teaching is my vocation and an area where I’ve developed skill over the past 25 years.

? I love working with people and feel hopeful about the storytelling possibilities of the web and social media specifically.

? I want to work with you and do have some flexibility with pricing. So get in touch, let’s make a plan and then go from there.

Have a Different Question?

Let’s get started

1) Send me your name, email, phone number, and the workshops you’d like to attend.

2) I’ll send you a short questionnaire that will help me get a sense of what you’re looking for.

3) Once I receive your completed questionnaire, I’ll give you a call and we can discuss the current status of your project, your goals and the support plan that would work best for you.

testimonials

“Marilyn is a truly extraordinary teacher. At 67 years old, a little computer-literate, I’d pretty much given up hope of expanding my skills beyond email and Facebook- and now I have a web page!

Marilyn is a master at assessing current skills levels and developing individualized plans to address our needs- some, in my case, I didn’t even know I had! I’ve never left a session without clear ideas of how to proceed with my project as well as written instructions to back up my new knowledge. She’s flexible, creative, non-judgmental and endlessly patient. It really doesn’t get better than this!”
~ Pam Minor

“Marilyn not only knows HTML and CSS inside out, she also knows how to break it all down and explain the subject in a way that any one can understand! She is easily one of the best teachers I have had the privilege to learn from.”

“Marilyn has a phenomenal talent for consistently transforming complicated concepts into clear and easy to understand information. As I’m making a career transition, I wanted to create my own website that closely reflected my personality, skills and make me stand out as an individual. Marilyn’s class methodically covered everything I needed to know. As a result, I was able to build a my own website from start to finish. I was so thrilled to come out of her class achieving my own personal goals and also making myself more marketable for my career change.”
